The complete guide to artificial grass maintenance

One of the things we tell people at every quote is that artificial grass is low maintenance. That’s true. But low maintenance isn’t the same as no maintenance, and there’s a difference between a lawn that’s neglected for years and one that gets a small amount of regular attention.

The good news is that what artificial grass actually needs is simple. Once you know the routine, it takes less time and effort than you’d spend on a natural lawn in a single month. Here’s everything your lawn needs to keep looking its best, broken down by how often you need to do it.

The basics: what artificial grass actually needs

There are three things that keep an artificial lawn in good condition over the long term.

  • Rinsing to clear dust, debris, and organic matter from the surface and the fibres.
  • Brushing to keep the fibres upright and prevent matting in high-traffic areas.
  • Removing debris promptly so it doesn’t break down on the surface or block drainage.

That’s broadly it. Everything else is either optional, seasonal, or specific to pet-owning households. Let’s go through the full routine.

Weekly maintenance

Remove leaves and debris

A leaf blower, a plastic rake, or a stiff-bristled brush all work well for clearing leaves, twigs, and other organic matter off the surface. The important thing is doing it reasonably regularly rather than letting material build up and start decomposing on the turf.

Decomposing organic matter is the main thing that encourages moss and algae growth on artificial grass over time. Keep the surface clear and you largely prevent the problem before it starts.

Rinse the surface

A garden hose is the most useful maintenance tool you own for an artificial lawn. A weekly rinse clears dust, pollen, and fine debris from between the fibres and keeps the surface looking fresh. On the Central Coast, where pollen levels can be significant through spring and summer, this makes a noticeable difference to how the lawn looks.

Monthly maintenance

Brush the fibres

Artificial grass fibres flatten over time in high-traffic areas. A stiff brush or a specific turf rake used against the direction of the blade brings them back upright and keeps the lawn looking full and even. This is the single most impactful thing you can do for the long-term appearance of the turf.

The frequency depends on how much the lawn is used. A quiet courtyard might only need brushing every couple of months. A backyard with kids and dogs running through it daily benefits from a monthly brush.

Check the edges and joins

Take a quick look around the perimeter and at any joins in the turf. Edges that are lifting slightly can be re-secured before they become a bigger issue. Joins that look like they’re opening up should be looked at sooner rather than later. Both are covered under our 8-year warranty if they relate to the original installation.

Seasonal maintenance

Spring: clear winter build-up

After a Central Coast winter, the lawn may have accumulated a layer of organic debris from leaf fall and wet weather. A thorough clear-out and rinse at the start of spring sets the lawn up well for the warmer months. This is also a good time for a proper brush to bring the fibres back up after winter.

Summer: rinse more frequently and manage heat

Summer on the Central Coast means higher dust levels, more pollen, and more use of the lawn. Rinsing more frequently during the warmer months keeps things fresh. If the surface gets warm on very hot days, a quick hose-down drops the temperature quickly and makes the lawn comfortable again within minutes.

For pet owners, summer is when odour management matters most. More frequent rinsing, and an occasional diluted pet-safe cleaner, keeps things fresh even through the hottest months.

Autumn: prepare for wet weather

Clear any build-up of leaves before the wet weather arrives. Leaves sitting on the surface through a wet autumn are the most common cause of moss and algae developing on the turf. A clean surface going into the wetter months avoids most of those issues.

Winter: minimal intervention needed

Winter on the Central Coast is mild enough that artificial grass rarely needs much attention. Keep the surface clear of debris and give it a rinse if it’s been dry for a while. The drainage in a well-installed lawn handles rain without any intervention.

Maintenance for pet owners

If you have dogs, there are a few additions to the routine worth building in.

  • Rinse the lawn two to three times a week rather than once, particularly in the areas your dogs use most. This is the most effective way to prevent any odour build-up.
  • Remove solid waste promptly, exactly as you would from any outdoor surface.
  • Once a month, apply a diluted pet-safe cleaning solution across the surface and rinse it off. This handles any residue that regular rinsing doesn’t clear.
  • Brush the high-traffic areas, the paths your dogs run repeatedly, more often than the rest of the lawn. These are the spots that see the most fibre compression.

The maintenance requirement for a pet-friendly artificial lawn is still significantly less than managing a natural lawn with dogs on it. Most of our pet-owning customers find the hose is all they need for day-to-day upkeep.

What to avoid

A few things that can damage artificial grass or void the warranty:

  • Cigarette butts or anything that burns. Synthetic fibres melt. Even a single cigarette butt left on the surface can cause visible damage.
  • Sharp metal tools like metal rakes or hard-tined forks used directly on the surface. Stick to plastic or rubber-bristled tools.
  • Harsh chemical cleaners not designed for artificial grass. Standard household cleaners can affect the backing or the fibres. If you’re dealing with a stain or odour that rinsing doesn’t fix, call us and we’ll advise the right product for the specific issue.
  • Driving vehicles or parking heavy equipment on the turf. The fibres and sub-base aren’t designed to handle vehicle weight.

When to call us

Our 8-year warranty covers workmanship and product issues. If you notice the edges lifting, a join opening up, drainage that doesn’t seem to be clearing properly, or any area of the turf that looks different to the rest, get in touch with us rather than trying to address it yourself. Most issues that arise in the first several years are straightforward to resolve, and catching them early is always better than leaving them.

If you have a question about your lawn that isn’t covered here, get in touch with our team. We’re always happy to advise.

Frequently asked questions

A weekly rinse and a monthly brush covers most of what the lawn needs. Pet owners benefit from more frequent rinsing. Seasonal clear-outs, particularly in spring and autumn, keep the surface in good condition year-round.

Regular rinsing is the most effective approach, two to three times a week for a yard with active dogs. A monthly application of a diluted pet-safe cleaning solution handles any residue that rinsing misses. Good drainage installed at the base is also fundamental. If odour is a persistent issue, call us and we can assess whether the drainage is performing as it should.

Brush the surface with a stiff brush or turf rake, working against the direction of the blade. This is the most effective way to bring flattened fibres back upright. Do this regularly in high-traffic areas to keep the lawn looking full and even.

A gentle pressure wash is fine and can be useful for a deep clean. Avoid directing a high-pressure jet at the same spot for an extended time as this can displace infill. A regular garden hose with a spray nozzle handles most cleaning tasks without any risk.

It can, particularly in shaded areas with poor airflow where organic debris accumulates. Regular clearing of leaves and debris prevents most moss and algae from establishing. A diluted outdoor cleaning solution applied and rinsed off treats any growth that does appear.

Quality artificial grass, properly installed and given basic regular maintenance, typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Every Coastal Evergreen installation is backed by an 8-year warranty on both the product and workmanship.
